3 Ways to Stay Grounded in December

This past week I did a quick poll on my socials with a simple question and 2 answers to choose from:

“How are you feeling”

  1. My head is spinning.

  2. I’m on my A game

The overwhelming response was from my community of followers was - “My head is spinning.” Of course it was. We carry heavy mental and emotional loads as it, and then add to it the extra overwhelm and heightened states of anxiety December brings with the balancing of holiday schedules and budgets. For many of you, the sights and sounds of Christmas just bring with it painful memories of loss of loved ones.

So how can we stay grounded during the month of December? These 3 tips I offer aren’t ‘expert advice’ but rather things that have worked for me; and I hope you find some value here too.

  1. Plan in some extra ‘self-care’ time on your calendar, even if it’s simply 5 minutes of breath work, meditation or movement each day. For me, it’s my morning coffee by myself and some quiet moments to reflect and write.

  2. Take a ‘less is more’ approach with your calendar and schedule. Choose one day during the week that’s considered ‘sacred’ and keep it free from obligations outside of your home. This week, we kept our son home from hockey practice, because we hadn’t had a family sit down supper together all week - it was just what we needed.

  3. Plan something you have to look forward to that doesn’t require a lot of work for you but will bring you and your family some added JOY. For us, we planned our annual family tree hunt at a local Christmas tree farm where we’ll drink hot cocoa and shop the hand-made gifts (and the kids will likely bicker about what tree to choose, but it’s always one for the memory bank!)

I’ll leave you with this, when you have the urge to do more, be more, or experience more this month, give yourself a reminder that ‘what is’ is often exactly enough.

Reach into grace, and if needed, grit, to take on this month of December.

Sending you light + love, always.
